x Robin Stone...mom, writer member
since 2008 x x x There is a saying, “home is where the heart
is”. Over the years, I’ve learned that home has legs and home likes to travel.
As a result, I often feel at home sitting in a restaurant with a close friend or watching one of my kids participate
in a play or a public speaking contest. That’s why it should come as no surprise to you that one
and a half years ago, I found a new home for my heart at Judy’s Group Fitness.
I have never been a joiner. While I love good people,
my chosen vocations, writing, gardening, reading, exercising are primarily solitary acts – at least, for me.
I didn’t catch the disco bug back in the seventies (when I was two!), and I could never dance to save even the
lives of my two sons. All of that changed when I fell in love with boxercise. I still
can’t dance although I could probably provide a CPR rumba if push came to shove. I love disco once
per week and being part of a group of largely fabulous women has widened and enriched my world more than I can express.
I have made some wonderful acquaintances and begun a couple of lovely, solid friendships in
Judy’s studio. The woman herself is suffused with joy and spirit – it catches me and buoys
me up on even the gloomiest of days. I love my family, all of them, husband, kids, parents and brother and family.
I love my friends, wine, reading, chocolate, bread, popcorn, a good game of Blackjack or Scrabble.
When I am writing and in the groove, just like in class, time appears to pass much more quickly than
in reality, and I covet the feeling of being so immersed in doing something that all the extraneous “noise” falls
away. I regularly write personal essays for the “Connected parenting” website --- check it
out if you’d like at www.connectedparenting.com . There are a lot of great parenting tips for
all ages (even grown-ups) conveyed by long-time family therapist, Jennifer Kolari
I also spend a lot of time wondering – I wonder what those signs mean that say, “Hair
Removal: 50% off”. Does that mean that it costs half the price or that the salon just removes half
the hair? To this end, I prefer signs and people who say what they mean and mean what they say. I wonder
why and I am extremely pissed that some scientists decided that Pluto is not big enough to be a planet and demoted its status
to something called a planetoid, which to me sounds like an ailment that is whispered in a proctologist’s office.
I wonder what tomorrow will bring and look forward to meeting it head on.
My pearls of wisdom? Nah.
Diamonds trump pearls, you know, and the thing about diamonds is they are strong, virtually unbreakable and they shine.
Surround yourself with enough of them and you may become one yourself. x x JGF:
